For the past thirty-two years, fiscal years 1986 through 2017, the Muscogee County School District has received the nationally recognized Certificate of Achievement in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) for its CAFR. The Muscogee County School District is one of the few government entities state-wide that have achieved this honor for over thirty years. Like the ASBO award, this award too certifies adherence to excellence and best practices in financial reporting by going above and beyond generally accepted accounting principles. The ultimate goal of the program is to assist users of the financial information to assess the financial health of the participating government and to recognize individual government that succeed in achieving that goal.

This award certifies adherence to excellence and best practices in financial reporting. Distinguished Budget Presentation Award – GFOA
The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) presented the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award to the Muscogee County School District for its Annual Budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2016 (FY 2017). This marked the first year that the District has received this prestigious award. It reflects the commitment of the governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting. In order to receive this award, a government unit must publish a budget document that meets program criteria as a policy document, as a financial plan, as an operations guide, and as a communications device.
“The award represents a significant achievement by the entity,” said the Association in a release. “Budget documents must be rated ‘proficient’ in all four categories, and in the fourteen mandatory criteria within those categories to receive the award.” GFOA established the Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards Program (Budget Awards Program) in 1984 to encourage and assist state and local governments to prepare budget documents of the very highest quality that reflect both the guidelines established by the National Advisory Council on State and Local Budgeting and the GFOA’s best practices on budgeting and then to recognize individual governments that succeed in achieving that goal.

Attainment of this award was the result of the district’s system-wide implementation of procurement best practices.
